Suzan Stroud Original Music

About My Music:

Writing music has always been like therapy for me. It’s my process of figuring things out and coming to peace with the things that are hard to accept or that I can’t change. Music has the power to transform pain or difficulty into something beautiful. I’ve always been more driven to write about the human condition (mine in particular) rather than craft love songs. Common themes that show up in my music are about connection, acceptance, purpose and the struggle to balance survival and obligation with doing what matters.

Album: Reveal The Tapestry

“Wonder what I’ve woven, when I I thought I’d come unwound”

These lyrics seemed to sum up everything about these set of songs which is why ‘Reveal The Tapestry’ is the title but also the last track of this album. I started writing thinking that I was telling the story of me falling apart. Do difficult times damage you beyond repair or make you stronger? The threads in the moment don’t always reveal how they are part of the tapestry until you can step back and see the full picture.

Instrumental Music

I wrote these pieces for piano with specific learning goals in mind but I also wanted them to be enjoyable to listen to and play. I’ve always believed that the music should be the lesson. Hearing an idea or concept in action is so much more powerful and hopefully enables students to take those building blocks and make their own creations. As a writer, I also loved how these limitations challenged me to work to make the music as interesting and beautiful as I could within the boundaries I had.
